Vantage Data Centers, a leading provider of hyperscale data centre campuses, sought to expand its European presence with a new build facility in Milan, Italy. The project called for a state-of-the-art, scalable, and energy-efficient infrastructure that would meet the growing needs of cloud providers while ensuring reliability, sustainability, and future growth. Key challenges included:
- Delivering a high-density IT environment with stringent redundancy and efficiency standards.
- Meeting tight timelines to address surging digital infrastructure demands.
- Ensuring future scalability while maintaining sustainability commitments.
- Providing resilient infrastructure for continuous high-performance operations.
The facility, consisting of two buildings with two stories, was optimised to support colocation and hyperscale requirements, housing 8 data halls, each with a 4MW critical IT load. This design offers flexibility to accommodate future growth.
As the general contractor, we provided a comprehensive solution covering design, construction, fit-out, and commissioning, ensuring Vantage’s new build facility met the highest operational standards.
Leveraging our in-house local engineering expertise, we designed and optimised the facility to ensure high performance, efficiency, and scalability—all aligned with Vantage’s technical, operational, and sustainability goals. We also ensured compliance with Italy’s local construction regulations, working closely with our supply chain partners to guarantee smooth execution from design to fit-out and commissioning.
Energy-efficient cooling and sustainability
- Efficient airflow: CRAH (Computer Room Air Handling) units in two galleries for optimised airflow distribution.
- Cooling systems: A closed-loop chilled water system with air-side economisers for efficient cooling.
- Water efficiency: Near-zero Water Utilisation Efficiency (WUE), minimising environmental impact.
- Sustainable mobility: EV charging stations for cars and bikes to promote eco-friendly transportation as well as a 100+kW photovoltaic system to supply offices and secondary spaces.
- Environmental initiatives: Integrated rainwater harvesting for landscaping irrigation, drought-resistant plants, energy-efficient lighting, and tree planting to support biodiversity.
Our collaborative approach, combining global engineering expertise with local execution, ensured the timely delivery of Vantage’s Milan data centre, meeting the highest industry standards.
- Scalability: Two buildings are built in parallel with two phases completed almost simultaneously, through a single point of contact, delivering 4 data halls with 4MW of critical IT load per hall.
- Energy efficiency: Achieved a Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) of 1.35, supporting Vantage’s sustainability goals.
- Environmental responsibility: Reduced emissions using AdBlue diesel generators, near-zero water cooling systems, photovoltaic systems and rainwater harvesting.
- Community integration: Collaborated with local partners to ensure adherence to regional standards and foster economic growth.
By combining our engineering expertise, local market knowledge, and a strong supply chain network, we successfully delivered a high-performance, energy-efficient, and future-ready data centre that meets the dynamic demands of the European cloud market.
