The data center market is experiencing exponential growth, driven by the increasing demand for digital infrastructure. However, this rapid expansion revealed a significant challenge: a shortage of skilled workforce. Recognising this critical gap, we have launched an internal Data Center Academy program designed to equip and nurture new and existing employees with the necessary skills to thrive in this dynamic industry.
At our Data Centers Academy, we are dedicated to advancing professional development and upholding industry standards. The program is meticulously designed and based on our extensive experience delivering major data center projects across Europe. It offers a comprehensive and coherent curriculum focusing on a global standardisation approach with local market standards and legal requirements. The program encompasses four key modules:
Data center “what, why, how” sessions:
The modules provide a deep dive into the fundamentals of our industry, from design criteria and expected performance to current trends and future outlook. It equips participants with a complete understanding of the market dynamics, the organisational challenges, as a GC and as a specialised M&E contractor, and the factors driving its growth.
Commercial approach:
Participants will learn the intricacies of the tendering process, including how to prepare and respond to tenders effectively. This module is crucial for those looking to excel in project acquisition and management, sharing experience to avoid common pitfalls and focus on value added services and solutions for our clients.
Engineering:
The technical modules cover the essential engineering principles and practices across electrical, and mechanical engineering to the data center. This ensures participants are well-versed in designing, building, and commissioning data center infrastructure.
Project Management:
This module focuses on the methodologies, tools, and best practices required to manage projects from inception to completion, encompassing health and safety and environmental strategies to ensure we match precise requirements, and deliver a high build quality.
Our subject matter experts have developed the content library and training materials. This guarantees the knowledge and skills provided are current and pertinent, but also efficient for building next-generation data centers in an effective, sustainable, safe, and secure way. The training is delivered in-house, allowing for a tailored approach that meets the specific needs of our employees and specific market standards and legislation requirements to the precise needs of our clients.
“ Leading the launch of the Data Centers Academy has been an incredible journey. It started as an idea of our Brice Fourney, Head of Equans Data Centers, on our quality roadmap in July 2023 and became a fully realised program by September 2024. I had the privilege of working alongside my colleague, Marion Laurenchet, and our team. Together, we empowered employees to become trainers while balancing their operational roles. All to prepare our workforce for the unique challenges of building data centers. The feedback from our first participants and trainers has been invaluable, and we are excited to refine and expand the Academy to deliver an even greater impact. ”
To cater to different levels of familiarity and expertise, we have created two training modules –
Teaser modules: these introductory sessions are designed to familiarise employees with the basics of data centers. They serve as a foundation for those new to the field, providing essential knowledge and context, enabling an efficient teamwork by rising the overall understanding of what everyone is doing.
Complete modules: these comprehensive sessions are tailored to the profile of the employees, offering in-depth training that aligns with their specific roles and career aspirations, with the opportunity to develop good working relations between our seasoned experts and rising talents.
Our Data Centers Academy is more than just a training program; it is a strategic initiative aimed at fostering a skilled and knowledgeable workforce capable of driving the future of the data center market. This program not only addresses the skills shortage but also reinforces our position as industry leaders committed to excellence, performance, and forward-thinking.
By investing in our employees’ development, we are ensuring that they are well-equipped to meet the challenges of the evolving data center landscape. Our academy stands as a beacon of our professionalism, expertise, and unwavering dedication to the growth and success of our team and the industry at large.
