As part of National Apprenticeship Week and the theme “Skills for Life”, we met Rohan Gill and Henry Strong, two of our Commissioning Apprentices, who are three months into their schemes. They shared their experiences as apprentices who are building lifelong careers in the data center industry.
Learning through practical experience
Rohan and Henry are currently studying their Level 4 Engineering Manufacturing Technician Apprenticeship standard at Uxbridge College. They joined our team and quickly immersed themselves in the world of data centers.
When asked why they applied for this specific apprenticeship role, both Rohan and Henry highlighted the unique opportunities in regards to commissioning activity that come with working on a data center during the construction phase.
“I thought it was an interesting opportunity to work on a data center during the build process,” Rohan explained, “You get to work on a lot of systems and see how everything comes together.”
A supportive team environment
Starting a new role can be daunting, but Rohan and Henry felt supported every step of the way. Henry said, “We work with each member of the team at our own pace, and there’s always someone to call if we’re unsure.” Rohan agreed, “Everyone was really welcoming. When we do something new, someone takes the time to walk us through it.
Throughout their apprenticeship, Rohan and Henry have benefitted from a supportive environment that encourages growth and development. Henry said, “We’re given clear targets each week to keep us on track, and we get to work alongside experienced team members who adjust their teaching to our pace.”
“ In an industry with an increasing skills gap, the benefit of employing apprentices cannot be underestimated. It allows the company to invest in the apprentice’s career and the future of the business. We can train young people with the skills our business needs, thus nurturing the next generation of talent. Young people, new to the industry, are enthusiastic, keen to learn and have a fresh approach. We have found their understanding and use of technology has sped up everyday tasks. For the apprentices, they can earn while they learn, gain a recognised qualification and have the prospect of career opportunities that are wide and varied. The recruitment process was straightforward with the invaluable support from the Equans Early Careers Team who assisted with interviewing and selecting a suitable college. ”
Skills for life
In just three months, Rohan and Henry have already developed an impressive range of skills that will serve them well in the future.
At Equans Data Centers, we actively encourage our apprentices to develop both technical and soft skills through hands-on learning, mentorship and structured training programmes. By working on live projects alongside experienced colleagues, our apprentices gain the support and knowledge they need to succeed in their roles.
